In 2006, the group was institutionalized with the founding of the non-profit association “TU9 – German Institutes of Technology e. V.” and the opening of the TU9 Office in Berlin.

In 2018, when revising the association’s bylaws, the name of the Alliance was changed to “TU9 – German Universities of Technology e. V.” The nine TU9 founding members – RWTH Aachen University, Technische Universität Berlin, University of Braunschweig – Institute of Technology, Technical University of Darmstadt, Technische Universität Dresden, Leibniz University Hannover, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Technical University of Munich and University of Stuttgart – continue to form the TU9 Alliance today.

A hallmark of TU9 Universities is their cosmopolitan outlook, providing an inspirational work environment, fostering strategic alliances with leading institutions worldwide and promoting the global reach of the label German Engineering. TU9 internationalization activities range from expanding institutional networks to research collaborations and recruiting outstanding talents at all career levels. TU9 Alumni have the knowledge and skills sought after nationally and internationally to meet the social challenges faced today and shape tomorrow’s world.

The Berlin-Brandenburg capital region has around 6.2 million inhabitants and is Germany’s second-largest metropolitan region after the Rhine-Ruhr region. Berlin straddles the banks of the Spree, which flows into the Havel (a tributary of the Elbe) in the western borough of Spandau. Among the city’s main topographical features are the many lakes in the western and southeastern boroughs formed by the Spree, Havel and Dahme, the largest of which is Lake Müggelsee. About one-third of the city’s area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals, and lakes. The city lies in the Central German dialect area, the Berlin dialect being spoken.

Catholic Munich strongly resisted the Reformation and was a political point of divergence during the resulting Thirty Years’ War, but remained physically untouched despite an occupation by the Protestant Swedes. Once Bavaria was established as Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806, Munich became a major European centre of arts, architecture, culture and science.

03. Hamburg

Hamburg is one of Germany’s three city-states alongside Berlin and Bremen, and is surrounded by Schleswig-Holstein to the north and Lower Saxony to the south.
